Clonazepam Uses

Clonazepam used to prevent and treat seizures, panic disorder, anxiety, and the movement disorder known as akathisia. Clonazepam  is a tranquilizer of the benzodiazepine class. It is thought that benzodiazepines work by enhancing the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain and typically taken by mouth.

Clonazepam Dosage

Clonazepam Adult Dose for Seizure Prophylaxis
Dose of 1.5 mg orally per day divided into 3 doses; can be increased in increments of 0.5 mg to 1 mg every 3 days until seizures are adequately controlled or until side effects prevent any further increase. Maximum dose of 20 mg/day can be given depending on Condition.

Clonazepam Adult Dose for Panic Disorder
Initial dose: 0.25 mg orally 2 times per day
Maintenance dose: 1 mg orally per day
Maximum dose: 4 mg/day

Clonazepam Pediatric Dose for Seizure Prophylaxis
Up to 10 years of age or 30 kg body weight: 0.01 mg/kg/day to 0.05 mg/kg/day orally administered in 2 or 3 divided doses and Maintenance dose 0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg/day. For 10 years or older or 30 kg and over: 1.5 mg orally per day divided into 3 doses. The Dose may be increased in increments of 0.5 mg to 1 mg every 3 days until seizures are adequately controlled or until side effects preclude any further increase. Maximum dose 20 mg/day can be given depending on Condition.

Clonazepam Side Effects.

Clonazepam can slow or stop your breathing, especially if you have recently used an opioid medication or alcohol.  if you have slow breathing with long pauses, blue colored lips, or if you are hard to wake up, Contact Your Doctor immediately. Inform your doctor right away if you have new or sudden changes in mood or behavior, including new or worse depression or anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, aggressive, restless, more active or talkative, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Common clonazepam side effects may include:

Drowsiness.
Dizziness.
Feeling tired.
Depressed.
Memory loss problems.
Problems with walking.
Problem with coordination.

Clonazepam is not approved to treat panic disorder in anyone younger than 18 years old, do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice. Do not start or stop seizure medication during pregnancy without your doctor’s advice. Clonazepam may harm an unborn baby, but having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both mother and baby. Some people have thoughts about suicide while taking clonazepam. Stay alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Your family or caregivers should also watch for sudden changes in your behavior.
